My client is an IT services company based on the West Coast of the US. Their core business focus is on developing software and strategies for ePOS systems, and as a result they've ended up having to manage some IT infrastructure. Whilst they have a solid understanding of the network topology, they were looking for someone to come and take a look at the networks for a few of their clients and provide some Active Directory and DNS clean up along with some Group Policy creation and testing.

Some of the group policy work has been to create drive mappings, force Network Discovery settings, and deploy printers from a central location.

In addition to the above, I also helped the client get one of his clients setup for Azure AD Connect to help synchronize the on-premise AD with Azure AD in Office 365 for one of his clients.

This relationship is ongoing, and we're constantly developing new requirements and projects to work on as he's been delighted with my work.

Network and Windows Server Management & Health Checks

My client was the owner of an office management company using a shared office with a Draytek router configured on a VIrgin Media Superhub modem.

As a result of the two network devices, one of this client's Windows 10 devices couldn't dial an L2TP VPN that was supposed to terminate at the Draytek Router.

I found a workaround for the client who didn't want to look at wholesale changes to the network to help circumvent a security feature in Windows that prevents the key exchange on a device that isn't internet facing. This included rolling back to a previous version of Windows 10 (without the 1709 Feature Update), and then a registry hack to allow the 'non-secure' key exchange, and the VPN connection then started working.

I then provided some recommendations for considerations to be made in his next office, as he had plans to move offices within the coming months.

He was delighted with a quick and effective workaround for a bargain price, and has said he'd like to work with me again.

PCI DSS Compliance for a Web Application hosted in Azure

My client, a surf shop on the Eastern Seaboard of the United States has a network consisting of a Microsoft SBS 2011 Server, running a domain with six machines. The client reported a number of issues with email delays, as well as a number of failing IT components.

I spent time with the client to understand exactly what his issues were, and addressed each of them systematically. The resolution included a sanity check of his existing configuration to find numerous issues with DNS, DHCP, AD, Exchange, and IIS configurations as well as patching issues.

Once complete, I also assisted the client with migrating from an outdated POP mail system to a filtered SMTP inbound service, improving the speed in which email came in and was dealt with.

Part of this job also included some tuition with the client to supply best practices to compliment the changes made to the server and network in order for them to get the most out of the system.

IT Systems Sanity Check

An IT provider in Los Angeles was looking for someone to assist with some one-to-one tuition on a number of queries surrounding the Connectwise Software Suite (Connectwise Manage, Automate/Labtech, Connect/ScreenConnect).

I worked with them to help finish a failing implementation left by the software vendors themselves, and worked through a list of requisites to ensure that the system is working as optimally as it could, resolving issues with accessing ScreenConnect for remote access, as well as a number of other snagging items.

In addition to the technical element of the role, I have provided direct tuition with key team players to help them get the most out of the system as they move forward.

As an aside, I was also able to provide some advice regarding specific technical issues and troubleshooting issues that the client had with their own clients, and effectively provided a degree of extension to their own technical offering.

My client ran a significant eCommerce website from a VPS running Linux/CentOS. He complained that the server kept shutting itself off, couldn't stay up, and he had been a victim of an open-relay email attack on his server. He also mentioned that he could no longer access his website, or SSH to the server to resolve the issues.

I worked with the VPS owner to isolate and resolve the issues with his boot sequence, closed the open-relay (due to weak password security on a mail account), patched WHM and cPanel on the system, hardened Email security, checked and monitored system resource usage, and adjusted the firewall to remove a blacklisted instance of his IP address to help restore access. This partnered with an update of the IP address used to allow SSH access (as his Public Facing IP Address had changed) allowed him to effectively manage his web server again.

The client was delighted to have his VPS back up and running on the same evening as he had reported the issue due to timezone
