This project could be the bases as an epic novel or a opus on the development process and how difficult it can be yet at the same time how it can also change your entire outlook on the human race. Which is what Johan Van Zijl has done for me with this project. It sounded simple enough to both of us...port an Android app that had been designed for the smartphone to work on the new tablets coming out for the Android, such as the Samsung Galaxy for example. And at the same time as getting it to work with tablets I asked the developer to revamp the architecture of the app so that it did not require the customer download the entire app when we updated the database. Johan felt it was about a 90 day max job and that sounded reasonable. That was at the end of Feb of 2011. Its now toward the end of September 2011, about 7 months later, and we just finished! The reasons are plentiful and like I said would fill a book but perhaps the most difficult was just getting the Android app to work with so many different devices, each of which worked a little different than another, and to get it to work with any size screen a device might have, adapting to that resolution and reflowing all the pages, plus downloading a huge database without skipping a beat and of course being able to pick up when the connection might have dropped out, etc etc. And the most marvelous thing is that NOT SINGLE TIME DID I HEAR A COMPLAINT FROM THE DEVELOPER. Johan just plowed along day after day, hour after hour, doing everything he could to fix what turned out to be pretty horrible source code from the previous developer. I began to think that maybe Johan was not a human but some sort of angel that had been sent to me to restore my faith in programmers. Okay that might sound extreme but I am being honest when I say Johan is by far the best developer I have ever worked with in my life, and that is no short amount of time, I've been doing this for about 40 years now. I could go on and on but its best to just it at this: I was so lucky to have selected such a remarkable developer on vworker and I am grateful for that. And I am grateful to have started a long enduring friendship with a great guy. Mitch
