In design and construction of our balsa wood car frame, we sought to achieve given performance standards while minimizing material cost and weight and providing an optimum factor of safety in the design. Given 60 feet of balsa wood, we were tasked with the construction of a car frame that followed a general boundary geometry, sustained a 100 newton load with minimal deformation, achieved at least 600 newtons of force before failure, and maintained the integrity of a passenger cell throughout testing.

Each student in the class were assigned to a small team, and each team were assigned to manufacture individual parts that assembled together to produce an engine powered by an engine based on the Stirling cycle. In design and construction of our balsa wood car frame, we sought to achieve given performance standards while minimizing material cost and weight and providing an optimum factor of safety in the design. Given 60 feet of balsa wood, we were tasked with the construction of a car frame that followed a general boundary geometry, sustained a 100 newton load with minimal deformation, achieved at least 600 newtons of force before failure, and maintained the integrity of a passenger cell throughout testing.
