Description
Experience Level: Entry
Interview an entrepreneur or former entrepreneur and write a paper of 4-5 pages or longer (not shorter) using the outline of “The Art of the Start” as a guide on why and how this business was started, why it has (or will) succeed and endure or why it might fail (or did fail). . Double-spaced with Calibri (Body) 11 or 12 font (standard Word document font).
Below are general guidelines (note that if it is less than 4 FULL pages then you have not written enough about the below (i.e., needs more substance; can be longer than 4 FULL pages, not shorter):
- Page 1 – Summary of Business (type of business – restaurant, bike shop, car repair, nail salon, etc)
o Product or Service
How was this chosen by entrepreneur
o Industry/Market
o When it started (and/or ended) or will start
History of business
What stage is in now (startup, growth, maturity, decline)
o Type of entity (corporation, sole proprietorship, partnership, non-profit, etc) o Management team – Key members of team
o How is or was it funded (could be various ways per our class discussions)
o Annual sales volume (if not confidential) or units sold or services performed
- Page 2-3 – Describe major components and goals of the Business
o Business opportunity (how will/does the business serve the market) o Customer profile/base (target market)
o Business model
Describe the product or service and what makes them appealing to the target market
o Marketing and sales strategy
o The competition - What is your competitive advantage o Growth plans
o Financial Plan
Sale price/billing rate and Gross Margin of products/services
Is it positive cash flow now or when will it be achieved
Payment cycle for receivables and payables
Major cash or capital expenditure requirements in future
o Implementation Plan
Outline schedule for taking the business from planning stage to opening the doors
- Pages 4-5 – Major business issues and successes of entity
o State major business issues and major successes (and potential risks)
o What would you do differently if you owned it (or suggestions you would make) o Which one of the speakers (can be more than one) best helped you identify and
understand issues of being an entrepreneur (either if starting a new venture or
working within a larger, more mature company)
o What experience do you think you need to obtain before you start your own
business?
- Conclusion - What are the two to three things you want the reader to most remember about what you wrote above (Executive Summary)?
