About

I've got words, fonts and images and I'm not afraid to use them.

I am a New York Times Bestselling author who has been writing professionally since 1989 when my first science fiction story appeared in Analog Science Fiction magazine. Since then I have authored nine novels with traditional publishers (Random House/Del Rey, Baen, Harper-Collins/Eos, Pegasus) and five eBooks with Book View Cafe, an alternative small press of which I am a founding member. I balanced writing with a "day job" until 2005 when I went to freelance writing and editing full time. I also design book covers—please, take a look at my portfolios.

I have written a number of media tie-in books notably in the Star Wars and Batman “universes,” and enjoy working in shared-world projects. My most recent collaboration with Michael Reaves (THE LAST JEDI) was a New York Times Bestseller.

I was nominated for the John Campbell Best New Writer award in 1990 and my works have been finalists for the Nebula, British Science Fiction, and Sidewise (alternate history) awards, as well as being anthologized in several “Best of” anthologies.

In addition to writing under my own byline, I have ghostwritten and edited novels, memoirs, trade books, how-to books, and screenplays. I also have run writer’s workshops and performed instructional editing for clients who wish to learn the craft of writing. In addition, I blog on subjects from writing to science and religion at a variety of blog spots, including mayabohnhoff.com, BookViewCafe.com/blog, and bahaiteachings.org.

I also have fifteen years of experience in instructional design—writing, editing and managing the creation of adult instructional materials for software, technical processes, and human resource-related procedures. Since then I have ghost-written or edited numerous projects—both fiction and non-fiction—and have done instructional editing and writing workshops for clients who wish to learn craft.

Work Terms

I am flexible in my schedule, so work hours are as needed. I have worked with all of my clients long-distance via virtual meetings, messaging and email and prefer online communication.

I prefer working for an hourly rate, but am willing to work out different payment plans, including an advance with milestones, but I've found an hourly rate is fairest for me and my clients, because I get neither underpaid nor overpaid for my work.
